"Places"

Karlsruhe, Germany, July 2000 According to Janine Jenkins who lives over there

The commisary - now a fitness gym.

This is the old housing building right across from the high school. The Germans have added another two stories to all of the old housing buildings. If anything green looks overrun (last picture, especially), it's because the Green party in the government has legislated that no medians or public places other than parks, tourist areas, etc. can have the grass cut and manicured because that disturbs the little critters that live in the natural areas. So all around the former officer housing areas, the area looks very unkempt and almost abandoned. These are now German housing, obviously, from the cars parked there.

Heisenberg Hochschule - formerly KAHS

One of the office buildings on Smiley (the one on the end at the left as you enter, just across the street from the library.) This is now housing/resettlement for foreign workers.
The PX - now a grocery store.
Smiley barracks - fences and gates are gone, as are the motor pools in the back, the playhouse, gymnasium and that little food place. The only thing standing are the main office buildings/barracks that lined the main street in up to the library. These seem to be a resettlement camp for foreign workers in Germany. The Americans left all the books in the library and it is now the American Library of Karlsruhe. Again, none of the grass is cut now - it just grows wild, because of legislation in the govt.

A final thought...............................
